The
Headmaster of Mfantsipim school has been asked to step aside for
charging unapproved fees, a statement from the Ghana Education Service
has revealed.
“As a result of the collection of illegal fees
from students of Mfantsipim School, you are directed to immediately step
aside from responsibilities as the Headmaster of the school, pending
further investigations into the illegal collections,” the two paragraph
statement said.
The statement further indicated that the Central
Regional Director of Education will serve as the school’s headmaster as
investigations into the case continue.
The issue of illegal fees has been a major challenge that has been lingering in some educational institutions for sometime now.
In
2015 , 9 Headteachers of some basic schools who overcharged the
registration fees for Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE)
were demoted to the rank of teachers.
The GES in a bid to address this challenge warned all teachers to desist from the practice or face the full rigours of the law.
It also released approved fees for second-cycle institutions for the 2015/16 academic year to address this challenge.
